Howard & Sons Ltd were a chemical and pharmaceutical company known for manufacturing aspirin. They were obviously proud of their employees, a letter to the Times 25 Mar 1931, from Geoffrey Howard, director, pays tribute to Albert J Gwinnell who had been continuously in their employment for 62 years and that the total years service of their 20 oldest employees totalled exactly 1,000 years.
Equally when their employees died during the war, both WW1 and WW2, they placed their own tribute to them in the chapel at Ilford Cemetery.
Sadly the chapel has now been demolished due to dereliction and vandalism and the memorial moved to Barkingside Cemetery, Longwood Gardens.
The names inscribed on the memorial have been saved by ‘Boreenatra’ who has kindly let us publish his photos here.
