Barnardo’s Liverpool child emigrant to Canada
Barnardos Liverpool Child.
We have recently been contacted by a lady living in Sunderland, Ontario, Canada who found a prayer-book in their house around 20 years ago. She is now moving and remembered the book and would love to return it to the family.
The book has a note in the front written in a child’s hand, probably a young child.
He or she had been living at 195 Grafton Street, Liverpool, UK, and as the note includes (Care of?) Barnardo’s Homes, Myrtle Street he or she was probably one of the child emigrants to Canada under the British Home Movement. Between 1882 and 1939 Dr Barnardo’s sent 30,000 children to Canada.
The Liverpool Sheltering Homes rescued destitute and orphan children, in around 1889 they moved to new premises in Myrtle Street and in 1925 amalgamated with Dr Barnardo’s.
Given the inclusion of Dr Barnardos in the note the writer was probably there after 1925.
So can any one shed any light on the family or owner of this prayer book please do contact us:
We have found a Robert W COOKE born about 1898 who travelled from Liverpool on 11 Oct 1906 to Quebec with Barnardo’s and was living with John McKin and family in Middleton, Norfolk, Ontario in 1911, (listed as Cook, rather than Cooke) but he would not really match with the 1925 merge of the Sheltering Home with Barnardo’s given the 1906 date of travel.
The Library and Archives Canada Home Children 1869 – 1930 has a searchable database see here.
Robert W Cook, married in 1922 to Winnifred Victoria Fines, neither bride nor groom knew the names of their parents.

Hi! My name is Sheila,I am 81 years old and researching my family History looking for our 2nd cousin. William G Horney born 18th May 1911. The National Archives.gov.uk London gave us a digitised copy of The Regina carrying 40 children travelling on the ship ‘Regina. Sailing from Liverpool on to Quebec Montreal. And a copy of the list of children travelling on a Contract Ticket, under Mrs Birt’ Party, British Bach. No.3295071 C/O Liverpool Sheltering Homes, Myrtle Street, Liverpool. departure date 5th June 1924.
Willie George and our mother, were 1st Cousins. William and I are second cousins. William’s mother Alice Elizabeth Horney nee Jordon and our grandmother Annie Jane Godfrey nee Jordon were twins, born in Hackney Feb 24 1881. Our mother Mable Violet Godfrey born 30 August 1910.
It would be most wonderful to find out what happened to Willie George, as our Mother always called him.

My wife is the daughter of Robert Cooke who wrote in the above prayer book she would love to have the prayer book. She was born 10 January 1948.She can provide proof if needed of who she is.
My maternal grandmother Adelaide Cooke was born in 1906 . She had a brother called Robert , born 1910 , and she and all her siblings and extended family grew up in Grafton Street , Liverpool and lived there for many years .Their parents were Thomas Cooke born 1879 and Phoebe Ellison born 1879.However this cannot be the Robert you are looking for as my mother remembers growing up with her uncle Bob always there and she was’nt born until 1937. I do believe some relatives did emigrate to Canada and that the child may be a cousin of my grandmother as the name Robert is common in the family. My grandmother and some of her family dropped the e from the end of the name to become Cook . I know that my great grandfather Thomas Cooke born 1879 had a brother Robert born 1873 who married an Ann Cottier ( could they have had a son called Robert?) .Unfortunately I have no further information but there are family trees on Ancestry.co.uk who have researched the Cooke family further.Good luck with the search.
HI My wife is Margaret Cooke daughter of Robert Cooke who wrote in the prayer book if we can help with what you are looking for please let us know
Do you know if it is possible to get the prayer book for my wife
